Your nose is the focal point of your face, and its appearance greatly impacts your facial aesthetic. Having an asymmetrical or displeasing nasal shape can lower your self-esteem and confidence. Beyond appearance, the nasal bridge also plays a role in physical health including breathing and sense of smell.
At Restore Plastic Surgery, we understand both the cosmetic and functional importance of the nasal shape. Whatever your unique reasons are for wanting rhinoplasty in Memphis, our facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Sarah Hammond, is dedicated to artistic elevation and helping you look and feel your best.
A rhinoplasty, or more commonly known as a nose job, can have both cosmetic and functional benefits, in addition to boosting confidence and providing an overall increase in mental and physical wellness. It can also restore a youthful appearance by tightening the skin to correct loss of elasticity as a result of aging. Memphis patients who choose to undergo a cosmetic rhinoplasty may also find that it addresses various physical health conditions, such as:
Each client will have unique reasons for wanting a nose job. We encourage you to discuss your individual goals and expectations for the procedure with board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Hammond so that she can create an individualized surgical plan that meets these needs.
On the day of your rhinoplasty, you should arrive to our outpatient surgical center in comfortable clothing. You will be under general anesthesia for the procedure, so be sure to arrange for someone to pick you up after surgery and stay with you for the rest of the day to help with necessary activities.
Once you reach optimal sedation, Dr. Hammond will make small incisions inside the nostrils so as to not leave any visible scarring on your face. She will then reshape the nasal bones and cartilage to achieve the desired shape, depending on the type of rhinoplasty you require. In some cases, Dr. Hammond will take cartilage from other areas of your body, such as the ear or rib, to assist with reshaping. This will only be done if deemed safe for you and will depend on your individual care plan.
Once the nasal area has been reshaped to your preference, she will close the incision with a few sutures and place a splint around your nose. This will help maintain the new shape of the nose and encourage proper healing. It should remain in place for about a week, or until your follow-up appointment.
After your rhinoplasty, you may feel groggy or drowsy. This is normal while the anesthesia wears off, and is a great excuse to let yourself get plenty of rest. In addition to the splint, you may have padding under your nose to manage bleeding. Mild oozing within the first 24 hours after your surgery is normal and is not a cause for concern. If you experience significant bleeding, contact our team or seek immediate medical attention.
Memphis patients may find that they have some swelling, bruising, and discomfort around the nose and eyes after surgery. To manage this, use cold compresses and keep your head elevated. At this time you should avoid the use of NSAIDs, such as Advil, as they can increase your bleeding risk. While swelling should improve within 4-6 weeks after surgery, it can take a year to fully heal. Regular follow-ups with our team to manage your healing progress are vital to a successful outcome. We also encourage you to rest, eat well, and protect your nose from sun and pressure.
